Sega Game Gear

The Game Gear is infamous for capacitor failure — nearly every surviving unit needs a recap. Symptoms include a dim screen, vertical lines, or no power at all. A full capacitor kit restores almost every dead unit.

Common Faults & Fixes

Dim screen / vertical lines / no backlight

LIKELY CAUSE: Failed electrolytic capacitors on the backlight inverter board

  1. 1Open the shell — 8 screws under the rubber feet and labels.
  2. 2Locate bulging/leaked caps on the main board and inverter.
  3. 3Desolder and replace ALL electrolytic capacitors with a Game Gear recap kit (low-ESR preferred).
  4. 4Clean any leaked electrolyte with isopropyl before reassembly.

No power

LIKELY CAUSE: Failed capacitors or broken power jack

  1. 1Test the AC adapter first.
  2. 2If good, recap the power section.
  3. 3Inspect and reflow the DC jack solder joints.

Crackling sound

LIKELY CAUSE: Failed audio-section capacitors

  1. 1Replace the audio capacitors (included in a full recap kit).
  2. 2Clean the volume wheel with contact cleaner.

PRO TIPS

Recap kits cost ~$10–$20 and fix ~90% of dead Game Gears.
Use low-ESR capacitors — standard caps fail again within a few years.
