Rocks, pumps, and pinning — the surprisingly complex tactics behind Namco's digging classic.
Dig Dug rewards strategic digging far more than frantic tunnelling. The most powerful technique is 'pinning' enemies by catching them in narrow tunnels — a fully inflated enemy takes four pump blasts, but if you pump twice and release, they deflate and chase you again, resetting. Master the rhythm of double-pump and retreat. Rocks are your nuclear option — carefully tunnel above an enemy to drop a rock on them for massive bonus points. Two or more enemies crushed by the same rock multiplies your score exponentially. The fire-breathing Fygar is more dangerous than the green Pooka because his flames have range and he can only breathe horizontally — always approach Fygar from above or below. Tunnel designs matter: create multiple vertical shafts so you always have an escape route. Never dig yourself into a dead end. The depth bonus increases your point multipliers: enemies killed deeper underground score more, so lure them down before inflating. The bonus vegetable that appears in the centre of the map is worth grabbing if the path is clear.
