Transform your centipede game with these expert strategies for clearing boards and high scoring.
Centipede is one of the most misunderstood games in the arcade canon. Most players just shoot frantically, but the highest scores come from deliberate mushroom management. Mushrooms are everything in Centipede — they act as obstacles that deflect the centipede downward and protect fleas and spiders. The advanced strategy is to clear the playing field of mushrooms methodically, creating clear lanes. Shoot the head segments first when the centipede splits; destroying a body segment creates a head, giving you more targets but also more danger. The spider, which bounces unpredictably across your shooting zone, is your main threat — don't try to aim at it, let it come to you and fire where it's heading. The flea drops straight down when your mushroom count is low — watch for it and shoot it immediately. Managing the number of mushrooms on the lower half of the screen is the key to safe, high-scoring runs. The scorpion that occasionally crosses the top turns mushrooms poisonous — prioritise destroying those mushrooms immediately.
